A Review of the New Star Trek Movie

By Pete Maida

I’m a trekkie; I always was and always will be. Trekkies have been waiting for this movie a long time. For the most part I believe it was worth the wait. Trekkies know every episode and the history of every character by heart so we were quite interested to see how they were going to remain consistent. Without giving too much away I can tell you they came up with a way to avoid having to worry about it.

The audience needs to suspend logic a bit in order for the plot to get all of our favorite people in the right places onboard the brand new U.S.S. Enterprise. One day they were cadets and the next day they were controlling the best starship in the fleet. We were all happy to make the leap to see this crew. I think casting did a great job.

In front in gold in Pavel Checkov (Anton Yelchin); Anton has a better Russian accent.

In black is James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) he is the Kirk we’ve been looking for.

In blue is Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy (Karl Urban); some of us we’re hoping for a southern accent, but we do find out how he got his nickname.

In front in red is Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana); a more passionate Uhura and I think you will be surprised at whom she sets her sights on.

In back in red is Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (Simon Pegg); this Scotty has a bit more humor to him.

In back in gold is Hikaru Sulu (John Cho); this Sulu gets to show off his swordsmanship.

Could there be someone missing for this picture?  Oh yes of course.

Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto) has been a much anticipated character. We’ve know one Spock for forty years; how would anyone measure up? Leonard Nimoy had a stronger link to Spock than any actor in the series had to their character. Quinto’s Spock is more conflicted and more human. He does not always control his emotions as Kirk finds out in a very painful way. Zachary Quinto is known to all us geeks as Sylar, the psycho serial killer, on Heroes. It looks like he has a great future as a Vulcan should he choose to follow it.

The plot was a bit of a shocker because of what the bad guy gets away with in the name of revenge. I don’t think anyone expected it to happen.

The affects were amazing and the action was fast and furious at times. All in all it was a Trekkie’s dream. Yes the plot was forced a bit and the end was, as Spock would say, not entirely logical. The plot was also not as relevant as you might think. Trekkies were just happy to see a new crew for their beloved starship Enterprise. We are all hoping this is the start of a new set of movies and, maybe if we dream hard enough, another TV series.

These are my novels; please check them out.

I am a hard core Trekkie fan. I still have all the original Star Trek movies and series. Who could forget the Trouble with Tribbles. LOL!

This was a great movie, a rare occasion when "Hollywood" used their massive budget wisely & efficiently!
